One of the few Jewish artists tolerated by Stalin, preserved the world of his childhood in his art works. He portrayed the tradition of Jewish people, of a bygone era. Life of Jews in "shtetl" (the villages in the Ukraine, with a large Jewish population) was his principal theme.
