Valentina Shapiro, The Engaged

"In the sixties, that is in the period when unofficial Russian art was born and began to develop, there were several groups whose members were friends or held the same views on art. The rest of the non-conformist artists worked seperately, though all these talented masters, a majority of whom are now known abroad by all who are interested in contemporary Russian art, naturally were constantly in contact with one another. All of them, no matter what group they belonged to or trend they followed, were united by the desire to create what they wished and exhibited their paintings at home, and they had to resist repression together".
