There are certain surrealist elements in the work of Edouard Zelenine. His
"Man Violin" seen here is the incarnation of a poetic metaphor which is
not without a certain slightly mannered elegance. The combination of portrait,
landscape, the infinitely large and small and the still life forms a panoply
of artistic symbolism not unlike that of Magritte's. A metaphor commonly
found in the work of Zelenine is that of a brightly coloured butterfly against
a background of snow-covered Russian countryside.
